1993

January 7, 1993 – a bill regarding abortion law in Poland is passed. Now abortion is legal in three instances:
1. If the pregnancy was a result of an illegal act;
2. If the pregnancy posed a threat to the mother’s health or life;
3. If the foetus had an incurable abnormality or a fatal condition.

2016

April 2016 – two legislative initiative committees start working: “Save Women” is pushing to make abortion completely legal until the 12th week of pregnancy, “Stop Abortion” is pushing to make abortion completely illegal.

September 23, 2016 – the Polish diet rejects the “Save Women” legislative initiative.

September 25, 2016 – the political party Razem (Together) organizes protests in the biggest cities of Poland under the slogan “#czarnyprotest” (“#blackprotest”). At the protest in Wrocław, Marta Lempart calls for all women to protest on the 3rd of October. Ogólnopolski Strajk Kobiet (Nationwide Women’s Strike) is formed, with Marta Lempart and Klementyna Suchanow as leaders.

October 3, 2016 – protests are organized in 147 towns around Poland under the slogan “#czarnyponiedziałek” (“#blackmonday”). The total number of protesters is between 98 thousand and 200 thousand.

October 6, 2016 – the Polish diet rejects the “Stop Abortion” legislative initiative.

2017

October 3, 2017 – Nationwide Women’s Strike organizes protests in favour of the “Save Women 2017” legislative initiative.

October 23, 2017 – “Save Women 2017” submits the same legislative project, this time with more signatures than in 2016.

October 27, 2017 – a group of parliamentarians from right-wing parties (Law and Justice and Kukiz’15) put in a request for the Constitutional Tribunal to rule that the third point of the bill from 1993 is inconsistent with the Polish Constitution.

November 30, 2017 – “Stop Abortion” submits a legislative project with over twice as more signatures as the “Save Women 2017” project.

2018

January 10, 2018 – the first reading of the “Save Women 2017” and the “Stop Abortion” projects takes place at the Polish diet meeting. The diet rejects the “Save Women 2017” project. The “Stop Abortion” project goes further to the Committee of Social Politics and Family.

July 2, 2018 – the Committee of Social Politics and Family appoints a subcommittee to consider the “Stop Abortion” project.

2020

October 22, 2020 – the Constitutional Court rules that abortion in case of an incurable abnormality or a fatal condition is inconsistent with the Constitution.

Now – since October 22, 2020 protests have been happening almost every day in almost 500 towns all over Poland.
